Kempton optimistic for Stephen`s Day

Prospects for the glittering St Stephen`s Day meeting at Kempton were today described as very promising.

Clerk of the course Brian Clifford said: 'The ground is good and the forecast is better. It is quite breezy here at the moment, which is surprising. Tonight, the forecast is for it to be mild and tomorrow for 6 to 7 degrees.

'The forecast for Christmas night into Boxing Day is for a frost of minus one or two, which wouldn`t be a problem. Prospects are good.

'The daytime temperature for Boxing Day is 5C, which should be OK.'

He added that take-off and landing areas, as well as other vulnerable parts of the track, were being covered.

No precautionary inspection is planned, he said.

The card features the Pertemps King George VI Chase, in which French-trained First Gold bids to win the race for the second year running for Francois Doumen.

There are eight runners declared for the race, which also includes Best Mate, trained by HenriettaKnight and due to be ridden by champion jockey Tony McCoy.
